Virens (Latin for greening)
My profession: Landscape Designer and Nature Photographer
Location: New York City
My collection of botanical photos documents the individual characteristics of many species of New York City street trees and plants, including some weeds. In the tradition of botanical illustration of the 1800s, I have titled each image with genus and species names so that they have educational as well as aesthetic value.
My full collection of 1,000 images documenting 100 species can be found on flickr at http://bit.ly/virens
If you are interested, please email me a request to import more images into QOOP for creating prints and posters. virensviridis@gmail.com. Thank you.
My images are either:
2592 x 1944 px 8.6" x 6.5" (300 dpi); or 2448 x 3264 px 8.2" x 10.9" (300 dpi);
PLANTS AS ECOLOGICAL THREATS:
Many of the descriptions of my images are concerned with the ecological threat that many alien and/or invasive species have to our region, the Lower Hudson Valley of New York State. You may pursue further reading on each invasive species under the links I have provided, mostly from this source: Plant Conservation Alliance's Alien Plant Working Group www.nps.gov/plants/ALIEN/fact.htm
It is important to note that many of these invasive species can be purchased from plenty of mail order nurseries on the web, where they are sold especially for their attractiveness. It is our custodial responsibility as landscape architects to recognize these threats by sight.
SPECIAL THANKS:
I would like to thank my two teachers who lent me their knowledge and inspiration on countless walking tours in pursuit of plant identification. Kenneth Kammeyer, CLARB, has been a UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture teacher for 30 years. He led us to many parks and nature preserves in Palm Desert, Encinitas, La Canada, Arcadia and Santa Barbara, California. Professor Jess Hanks, Botanist, City College of New York, died of cancer in 2001. He led us through the wilderness of Van Cortlandt Park, Inwood Hill Park and Central Park and described the ecological and Native American history of these areas as well as the plants while he was in chemotherapy. Happy memories of both those bearded men were often with me while I traipsed through the woods of New York City with my camera.
I would also like to thank the knowledgeable horticulture staff at Wave Hill Public Garden in Riverdale, New York for taking the time to help me to identify plants by name.

Luis Avilés-Ortiz
“With an acute eye for detail and an innate ability to view the world as an art form, Luis Aviles brings a unique and very special talent to the photography forum. He makes the inanimate, animate. With growing popularity and being increasingly acknowledged by fellow photographers and advocates of his work as a passionate and charismatic artist, Luis executes brilliantly, capturing moments-in-time in each image. His poetic and sometimes quirky style translates into pictures which tell stories without words and which evoke an emotional and immediate bond with his audience.”

Daniel Beaman Photography
A little about Me
Professional Photographer and Native Southern Californian grew up near beaches, loves Photography and ephemera. Lives in Santa Monica Ca. Loves to shoot on location, Nature Animals, Portraits, Events, Artistic Nudes, Street Photography at Night, Fashion and any artistic or expressive subjects. Weston said "a true artist can create great images in his own home" never before has that been more true than today with all our modern machines to aid the photographer, artist.
"I believe the subject is best left un-manipulated by the Photographer or left as natural as possible to their element in order to capture the essence and feeling of their surroundings and thus to produce beautiful accurate images of a lasting impressionable nature. I believe my eye to be the barometer to the subjects soul, and my gut to guide my shutter release." Daniel Beaman.

New Horse Photography.com
Tami Jo Gramont grew up feeding horses in Indiana and going to art museums in Chicago. She now creates from Arizona, full of easy going and lovely people.
Tami Jo is a life time artist, business owner and believer in endless possibilities. Her greatest love, as a kid, was to draw and paint horses. After building another company, one that did not satisfy the creative desire, she broke from that to follow her first love - horses. That love, combined with photography has suited just fine.
She now pursues all things that flirt with her.
There is a Zen saying, "Before Enlightenment chop wood carry water, after Enlightenment, chop wood carry water."
Life, in its mundane usual way, is where art lives.
********* Things I have learned from horses:
~ Horses always know their priorities, how to conserve energy, who eats first, when to eat, when to sleep, when to drink...)
~ Ask until I have a clear and distinct “no” of any situation.
~ Horses are always interesting, even when standing still.
~ If they can, they will. Why not? What’s to stop them? They stop when they want to, even if I ask.
~ When I have a horse’s attention the slightest movement is significant. Don’t believe this? See how fast a fly can get a horse’s attention.
~ Become the source of my horse's (friend, dog, cat...) celebration, entrainment and joy!
******** I believe I make all of my decisions based on attraction.
I believe I have learned tons from horses about forgiveness.
I believe I still have a lot to learn from horses.
I believe I can love more than I know.
I believe I am my highest authority.
I believe that, sometimes, it is a good idea to listen to my heart over my head especially when it comes to adopting a puppy.
I believe I don’t always know the difference between my head and my heart and then should consult my gut. ;)
I believe I know very little about time.
I believe my art tells more about me than anything I can write.
I believe that at least one other human being will read this...

The Nature of Photography
Website: http://www.kimmanleyort.com
Email: kimmanleyort@mac.com
I have always loved taking photographs. Mostly self-taught, I have also taken darkroom classes at the Indianapolis Art Center and attended a Santa Fe Photographic workshop in New Mexico. Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant’s Visual Design workshops in New Brunswick, Canada, have greatly influenced my photography.
Photography is a spiritual practice for me. It keeps me grounded, present, and connected to the natural world. My goals in presenting my work are twofold: to help others notice the beauty of the natural world and to help people sense the deep connection and interdependence to everything around us.
Exhibit – “God is Light” is permanently hung in a conference room at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 West 86th Street, Indianapolis.
